Autopilot KAP 140

The Honeywell KAP 140 is a two Axis autopilot with Altitude Preselect. Here you will find a short introduction to the KAP 140 autopilot. The KAP 140 is a rate based digital autopilot system.

In System Operating Modes (1. section) you will find a short description of wing leveler (ROL), four lateral (HDG, NAV, APR and REV) and two vertical modes (VS and ALT). You will learn how to activate the autopilot and how to switch between these modes.

In Operations with the KAP 140 (2. section) you will see how the autopilot can help you accomplish your mission.

1. SYSTEM OPERATING MODES

Wing Leveler (ROL) Mode

In the roll mode, the autopilot maintains wings level flight.
  1. Press for 0,25 seconds the AP button to engage the autopilot
Note:
The KAP 140 engages into ROL and VS mode as a default.

Heading Select (HDG) Mode

In the heading mode, the autopilot will fly a selected heading.
  1. Set the HDG Bug to the desired heading on the DG
  2. Press for 0,25 seconds the AP button to engage the autopilot
  3. Press the HDG button to engage the heading select mode

Note: If you move the Heading Bug the autopilot will immediately turn the aircraft in the direction of the newly selected heading.
Press HDG button again to return to the ROL mode.

Navigation (NAV) Mode Using a DG from HDG Mode (45° Intercept)

In the navigation (NAV) mode, the autopilot intercepts and tracks VOR/RNAV and GPS courses.
  1. Engage the autopilot in the HDG Mode
  2. Select the desired frequency (VOR/RNAV) or verify the desired waypoint (GPS)
  3. Set the desired course on the OBS Knob
  4. Press the NAV button. Note NAV ARM annunciated
  5. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Set HDG Bug to agree with OBS course
  6. If the course deviation bar is greater than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the autopilot will annunciate NAV ARM
    • when capture point is reached the ARM annunciator will go out
  7. If the course deviation bar is less than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the HDG mode will disengage upon selection
    • the NAV annunciator will illuminate

Navigation (NAV) Mode Using a DG from ROL Mode (All Angle Intercept)

In the navigation (NAV) mode, the autopilot intercepts and tracks VOR/RNAV and GPS courses.
  1. Maneuver the aircraft to the desired intercept angle prior to selecting ROL mode
  2. Engage the autopilot in the ROL Mode
  3. Select the desired frequency (VOR/RNAV) or verify the desired waypoint or destination (GPS)
  4. Set the desired course on the OBS Knob
  5. Press the NAV button. Note NAV ARM annunciated
  6. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Rotate HDG Bug to agree with OBS course
  7. If the course deviation bar is greater than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the autopilot will annunciate NAV ARM
    • when capture point is reached the ARM annunciator will go out
  8. If the course deviation bar is less than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the ROL mode will disengage upon selection
    • the NAV annunciator will illuminate

Approach (APR) Mode Using a DG from HDG Mode (45° Intercept)

The Approach (APR) mode allows the autopilot to intercept and track LOC, VOR/RNAV and GPS courses.
  1. Engage the autopilot in the HDG Mode
  2. Select the desired frequency (LOC/VOR/RNAV) or verify the desired approach (GPS)
  3. Set the desired approach course on the OBS Knob (for a localizer, set it to serve as a memory aid)
  4. Press the APR button. Note APR ARM annunciated
  5. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Rotate HDG Bug to agree with desired approach course
  6. If the course deviation bar is greater than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the autopilot will annunciate APR ARM
    • when capture point is reached the ARM annunciator will go out
  7. If the course deviation bar is less than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the HDG mode will disengage upon selection
    • the APR annunciator will illuminate

Approach (APR) Mode Using a DG from ROL Mode (All Angle Intercept)

The Approach (APR) mode allows the autopilot to intercept and track LOC, VOR/RNAV and GPS courses.

Back Course (REV) Mode Using a DG from HDG Mode (45° Intercept)

The Back Course (REV) mode allows the autopilot to intercept and track a localizer back course.
  1. Engage the autopilot in the HDG Mode
  2. Select the desired frequency for LOC
  3. Set the front course inbound heading on the OBS Knob
  4. Press the REV button. Note REV ARM annunciated
  5. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Rotate HDG Bug to agree with front course inboung heading
  6. If the course deviation bar is greater than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the autopilot will annunciate REV ARM
    • when capture point is reached the ARM annunciator will go out
  7. If the course deviation bar is less than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the HDG mode will disengage upon selection
    • the REV annunciator will illuminate

Back Course (REV) Mode Using a DG from ROL Mode (All Angle Intercept)

The Back Course (REV) mode allows the autopilot to intercept and track a localizer back course.
  1. Maneuver the aircraft to the desired intercept angle prior to selecting ROL mode
  2. Engage the autopilot in the ROL Mode
  3. Select the desired frequency for LOC
  4. Set the front course inbound heading on the OBS Knob
  5. Press the REV button. Note REV ARM annunciated
  6. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Rotate HDG Bug to agree with front course inbound heading
  7. If the course deviation bar is greater than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the autopilot will annunciate REV ARM
    • when capture point is reached the ARM annunciator will go out
  8. If the course deviation bar is less than 2 to 3 dots:
    • the ROL mode will disengage upon selection
    • the REV annunciator will illuminate

Vertical Speed (VS) Mode

The Vertical Speed (VS) mode allows variable speed climbs and descents.
The ALT button toggles between altitude hold and vertical speed modes.

  1. Press for 0,25 seconds the AP button to engage the autopilot
  2. Set desired climb or descent rate using UP or DOWN button
Note: The KAP 140 engages into ROL and VS mode as a default.

Altitude Hold (ALT) Mode

The Altitude Hold (ALT) mode maintains the pressure altitude acquired upon selection of altitude hold. 
The ALT button toggles between altitude hold and vertical speed modes.
  1. Engage the autopilot in the VS Mode
  2. Press the ALT button
  3. Select UP or DOWN button to change altitude (by 20 feet per press)

2. OPERATIONS WITH THE KAP 140

Takeoff And Climb To Assigned Altitude

  1. After being well off the ground and safe climb rate activate the autopilot in Heading and Vertical Speed modes
  2. Set cruise altitude using the rotary knobs. Altitude ALT ARM annunciation occurs automatically upon selection
  3. Adjust the climb rate using the DOWN button in preparation for level out (The vertical speed value will be displayed for three seconds)
  4. Desired altitude has been reached and automatic altitude capture occurs
Note:The autopilot follows HDG Bug on the DG with immediate turns.

GPS Capture Using DG

  1. The autopilot is engaged on HDG mode (e.g. HDG Bug is set to 010°)
  2. Press HDG button to change to the ROL mode on the autopilot for an "all angle intercept"
  3. GPS data (waypoint) is selected for the CDI and the OBS is set to 040°
  4. Press the NAV button, NAV ARM is annunciated. ROL will change to HDG
  5. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Set the HDG Bug to 040°. The aircraft will remain wings level until the capture point
  6. When he capture point is reached, the ROL changes to NAV and a right turn is initiated by the autopilot
  7. Turn is complete and the autopilot is tracking the GPS course

Outbound On Front Course For Procedure Turn To ILS Approach Using DG

  1. The autopilot is engaged on HDG mode (e.g. HDG Bug is set to 270°)
  2. Set the ILS front course on the OBS
  3. Press the REV button
  4. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Set the HDG Bug to the front course (e.g. 058°). Since HDG was active upon selection of REV the autopilot will initiate a 45° intercept to the localizer signal (e.g. the aircraft will turn to 283°)
  5. When capture point is reached auto intercept mode is cancelled and reverse localizer mode is automatically activated (e.g. a left turn outbound on the localizer)
  6. At the desired point HDG mode is used to initiate the procedure turn. The aircraft is flying away from the localizer centerline at a 45° angle (e.g. set the HDG Bug to 283°)
  7. At the right time make a 180° turn using the HDG Bug.
  8. You must now select the approach mode by depressing the APR button
  9. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Set the HDG Bug to the front course (e.g. 058°). The aircraft will not turn until the front course is captured.

Front Course ILS Approach Using DG

  1. Continuation of the maneuver "Outbound On Front Course For Procedure Turn To ILS Approach Using DG"
  2. Approach coupling occurs (HDG annunciation changes to APR) and the glideslope mode is automatically armed (GS ARM)
  3. At the outer marker: altitude hold is automatically disengaged when the glideslope is engaged (ALT extinguishes and GS is displayed)
  4. At the middle marker: the pilot disengages the autopilot
  5. Missed approach: the pilot initiates the maneuver and stabilizes the aircraft into the climb (engage the autopilot in Heading and Vertical Speed mode as for take-off)

Outbound On GPS Approach Using DG

  1. The autopilot is engaged on APR mode approaching the IAF. Approach arm is indicated on the GPS annunciator.
  2. Upon waypoint alerting at the IAF, set the HDG Bug to outbound course (e.g. 238°)
  3. The GPS's Leg / OBS mode switching is set to OBS mode
  4. OBS is set to outbound course (e.g. the autopilot initiates a left turn to track the 238° GPS course)
  5. At the desired point HDG mode is used to initiate the procedure turn. The aircraft is flying away from the localizer centerline at a 45° angle (e.g. set the HDG Bug to 283°)
  6. At the right time make a 180° turn using the HDG Bug.
  7. The GPS's Leg / OBS mode switching is set to Leg mode and the OBS is set to the front course (e.g. 058°)
  8. Select the approach mode by depressing the APR Button.
  9. HDG will flash for 5 seconds: Set the HDG Bug to the front course (e.g. 058°). The aircraft will not turn until the front course is captured.

Inbound on GPS Approach Using DG

  1. Continuation of the maneuver "Outbound On GPS Approach Using DG"
  2. Approach coupling occurs (HDG annunciation changes to APR)
  3. At the FAF: ALT button is depressed to activate vertical speed mode. Desired descent rate is obtained using the DOWN button.
  4. At the MDA: ALT button is depressed causing the autopilot to level off and mantain a constant altitude.
  5. At the MAP: the pilot disengages the autopilot
  6. Missed approach: the pilot initiates the maneuver and stabilizes the aircraft into the climb (engage the autopilot in Heading and Vertical Speed mode as for take-off)
